Do you still smoke. Think about this.
Cigarette smoking still causes about three in ten cancer deaths in the U.S.
Even though smoking rates have dropped by about 50% since 1965, more than 160,000 people die each year from smoking related cancer!
Besides lung cancer cigarettes cause cancers of the mouth, nose, larynx and esophagus. It is also implicated in cancer of the stomach, pancreas, liver, kidneys, bladder, cervix, colon and rectum.
These figures do not include cancer deaths from second hand smoke or from cigars, pipes and smokeless tobacco. Also remember that smoking causes more deaths from cardiovascular disease than from cancer.
Do you still want to smoke? Why?

An update on Google Friend Connect
Posted: December 21, 2015

In 2011, we announced the retirement of Google Friend Connect for all non-Blogger sites. We made an exception for Blogger to give readers an easy way to follow blogs using a variety of accounts. Yet over time, we’ve seen that most people sign into Friend Connect with a Google Account. So, in an effort to streamline, in the next few weeks we’ll be making some changes that will eventually require readers to have a Google Account to sign into Friend Connect and follow blogs.
As part of this plan, starting the week of January 11, we’ll remove the ability for people with Twitter, Yahoo, Orkut or other OpenId providers to sign in to Google Friend Connect and follow blogs. At the same time, we’ll remove non-Google Account profiles so you may see a decrease in your blog follower count.
We encourage you to tell affected readers (perhaps via a blog post), that if they use a non-Google Account to follow your blog, they need to sign up for a Google Account, and re-follow your blog. With a Google Account, they’ll get blogs added to their Reading List, making it easier for them to see the latest posts and activity of the blogs they follow.
We know how important followers are to all bloggers, but we believe this change will improve the experience for both you and your readers.

Can You Lower Your Risk For A Heart Attck By Cutting Down On Saturated Fat?
Can you reduce your risk of having a heart attack by eating less saturated fats. The answer turns out to be yes, but only if you replace the saturated fats with unsaturated fats or foods with whole grains.
A large study published in a prestigious medical journal reported that if you cut down on saturated fats and replace the calories with low quality carbs and added sugars you will not reduce your risk of having a heart attack.
If you replace the foods that are high in saturated fats with those rich in polyunsaturated fats you will reduce your risk. Examples of heart healthy foods are nuts, seeds, and many vegetable oils. Do not forget toods rich in monounsaturated fats. Examples are olive oil and avocados.

What Is The Current Recommendation On Blood Pressure Control?
A new National Health Study of 9,361 adults age 50 or older concluded that current blood pressure standards are too high. Existing standards call for a systolic blood pressure of 140 or lower.
The patients in this study were randomly assigned to receive standard hypertension treatment or more aggressive treatment in order to lower systolic blood pressure to 120 or below. During the three year course of this study those who were treated more aggressively had a 25% lower incidence of heart attacks and the death rate dropped by 43%.
Most of us grew up in a time period when lowering systolic blood pressure to under 140 was a therapeutic success. Now we need to consider that the pressure should be even lower. This may prove to be very difficult for many people, and the side effects of the medications needed to reach this goal may be severe.
Anyway the new message is that lower blood pressure is better. What is your blood pressure? If it is a bit higher you. should discuss the advice from this study with your doctor.
If you would like to try natural techniques to lower your blood pressure read our book Live Longer Live Healthier.

Why Elephants Do Not Get Cancer
It is a fact that it is becoming harder and harder to get funding for medical research. With that in mind there may have been times when you wondered, for example, why are they spending scarce money studying the genetics of elephants. Here is an answer.
New research shows that elephants rarely get cancer. It seems that only about 4.8% of elephants die from cancer compared to about 25% of humans. You may say "so what" but the reason for this disparity may help save human lives.
It turns out that the genome of the African elephant is different than that of humans. Elephants have 20 pairs of a TP53 gene that produces a tumor suppressing protein. This protein prevents cells from dividing in an uncontrolled way. Humans have just one pair of this important gene, and humans have a much higher incidence of cancer.
A little finding like this may lead to the development of new and previously unknown treatments for many human cancers and by so doing save many many lives.

Another Reason To Get Enough Sleep
Why do you need a good sleep routine? One important reason is that if you do not get enough sleep you increase your risk of catching a cold This conclusion was reached in a study published in the journal Sleep. I would not have volunteered for this study, but 164 people did. They were quarantined, given nasal drops containing the cold virus and monitored for five days.
The investigators found that those who averaged less than six hours of sleep per night were much more likely to develop a cold than those sleeping seven or more hours.
It has long been suspected that sleep deprivation compromises the immune system. This study is one more bit of supportive evidence. Sleep well tonight!

K IS For Kale Have You Tried It?
Kale is a cruciferous vegetable, a leafy relative of broccoli and Brussels sprouts. It is high in vitamin K and beta carotene. It also has good levels of potassium, manganese, fiber, iron, magnesium and some other nutrients. One cup of kale is 35 calories and supplies 50 milligrams of vitamin C and about 100 milligrams of calcium. It is also a source of compounds that have anti-cancer, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effects.
You can eat kale raw or steamed. You can eat kale chips or whip it into a smoothie. Why not try it?
