Lifestyle Goals To Live Longer

A large study published in JAMA Oncology concluded that 1/4 to 1/3 of all cancer cases and nearly half of all cancer deaths could be avoided if better lifestyle goals were followed. These goals are:

1) Do not smoke
2) Maintain a healthy weight
3) Limit alcohol
4) Exercise moderately at least 150 minutes a week or vigorously for at least 75 minutes a week

It was also found that people who are most physically active are at reduced risk for half of 26 major types of cancer. This may be new news to some, but we sounded the alarm and had the same suggestions in our  first book TriEnergetics. Look for yourself and get more tips for a healthy lifestyle.

Is Agave The Best Choice?

Agave syrup is derived from the same Mexican plant as tequila. It is touted as a healthier alternative to refined cane sugar. Table sugar (sucrose) is half fructose and half glucose. Agave syrup can be up to 80 per cent fructose. This is more fructose than what is in high-fructose corn syrup. There is substantial evidence that large amounts of fructose can promote insulin resistance, boost triglycerides and have adverse effects on blood cholesterol.

The bottom line  is that agave syrup is simply another form of concentrated processed sugar. If you use it use it sparingly. No sugar is a good source of nutrition.

Eternal Words OF Wisdom Aout Sugar

We can make this very brief. Sugar kills. It is a major cause of diabetes, obesity and heart disease. Remember we are not talking about eating lots of packaged sugar. We are referring to those foods that contain or are rapidly converted to sugar. This list includes refined flour, sugary drinks as well as added sugar to foods.

We published our first health book seventeen years ago. One of our important topic points was that sugar is a major health problem and that a healthy diet must minimize refined sugar, refined flour and sugary drinks. Time moves on, but some things remain true.

Another Reason For A Healthy Lifestyle

In our books and our blogs we promote the importance of a healthy lifestyle. Now a very well done study of more than 50,000 people was published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

It correlated a genetic score based on 50 heart related genes and a lifestyle score for those included in the study. They found that even though the worst genetic scores can double the risk of a heart attack a healthy lifestyle score appeared to nearly counteract the risk. In contrast an unhealthy lifestyle erased about half the coronary benefit of a good genetic score.

We suggest that you read one of our books to learn more about a healthy lifestyle.

Can Herbal Remedies Be Dangerous?

The production and advertising of herbal supplements is a huge business. It is not supervised or monitored by the FDA; therefore, it is a matter of buyer beware. Do you take one or more herbal remedies? Have you ever questioned whether that pill or drink is perfectly safe to put into your body?It may not be and we are now learning that in some cases supplements may be dangerous.

For example a new review reported that the proportion of all drug related liver injuries that could be attributed to supplements has risen from 7% in 2004 to about 20%. Body building formulas and weight loss products accounted for about half of the cases of liver damage. Various other supplements accounted for the other half.

It is very tempting to pop a pill to treat a problem or to reach a goal. Do some research first and make certain that the risk is not greater than the benefit.

Eating Cheese May Be Healthy

In the topsy turvy world of nutrition what is unhealthy today may be healthy tomorrow. It seems that this may be the true for eating cheese. For many years eating cheese has been a no no because cheeses are loaded with saturated fats. This perception has changed recently with the understanding that the primary health menace is sugar not saturated fat.

In fact it is now thought that there are some health benefits from eating cheese in moderation. For example several recent studies have linked to either no increase in cardiovascular disease or even a lower risk. Some studies suggest that cheese may help keep blood sugar in check. Other studies suggest that eating cheese may have an anti-cancer effect. This is especially True for colon cancer.

The bottom line is that the jury is still out on some of these claims, but eating cheese can be part of a healthy diet when the eating is in moderation.

Do Your Tomatoes Lack Flavor?

If you store your tomatoes in a refrigerator you may not be aware that you are losing flavor daily. In fact a recent scientific study  found that keeping tomatoes below 56 degrees F reduced the expression of several genes involved in the synthesis of flavor imparting compounds.

The take home message is that if you do not refrigerate your tomatoes they will taste better but not last as long.
