K IS For Kale Have You Tried It?
Kale is a cruciferous vegetable, a leafy relative of broccoli and Brussels sprouts. It is high in vitamin K and beta carotene. It also has good levels of potassium, manganese, fiber, iron, magnesium and some other nutrients. One cup of kale is 35 calories and supplies 50 milligrams of vitamin C and about 100 milligrams of calcium. It is also a source of compounds that have anti-cancer, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effects.

Sugar Is Toxic Here Is More Evidence
We have been saying for some time that sugar is toxic. Sugar calories turn to fat in the liver. They increase insulin resistance and increase the risk for diabetes, heart and liver disease. If you want to continue your old habits that include lots of sugary things in your diet this study may convince you to change to a healthier life style.
the lead author of this study, an endocrinologist, asked a dietician to change the meal plans of 43 obese children. The new diet maintained the same total calories but substituted processed carbohydrates for foods with added sugars. Added sugar was limited to 10% of their daily calories.
Within nine days the children's blood sugar levels had fallen by more than 50%. Their levels of triglycerides dropped by 33% and their "bad" cholesterol was also lower.
The rapidity with which these changes occurred astonishes us, but this study demonstrates that excessive sugar increases the risk of the metabolic syndrome, a cluster of conditions that increase the risk for heart disease, diabetes and stroke.

In our books we talk bout the importance of a good life style in maintaining health and preventing disease. Now for you stubborn non believers here are some interesting facts coming from a study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
Women who did not smoke, had a normal body mass index, exercised at least two and a half hours a week, watched an hour or less of TV a day, ate a healthy diet and limited alcohol to a drink or less a day had a 92% lower risk for coronary heart disease.

In our books and our blogs we have emphasized the importance of a balanced life style. The seeds that you plant today will determine your health as you get older. With this in mind the article that we saw in today's news resonates with us and we hope that it does with you.
59% of all U.S. adults are now on prescription medication. Furthermore this number increases yearly. The researchers who published this study in the Journal of the American Medical Association stated that there was no single explanation for this rise in prescription drug use, but the primary cause was the obesity epidemic. Of the 10 drugs that were most widely used eight are prescribed to treat diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and other conditions related to being obese.

Olive Oil Lowers The Risk Of Breast Cancer
This is a post that I love because we grow olive trees and produce an award winning extra virgin olive oil. Following a Mediterranean diet rich in fruits and vegetable, fish, whole grains, and olive oil has been shown to lower the incidence of heart disease, stroke and dementia.
Now a new study based on the answers of more than 4,000 women found that those who followed an olive oil heavy Mediterranean diet had a 68% lower risk of developing breast cancer than those who followed a standard Mediterranean diet. To get this benefit olive oil had to comprise more than 15% of the woman's total daily calories. For every additional 5 per cent of calories from extra virgin olive oil the risk for developing breast cancer was lowered even more.

Does An Aspirin A Day Keep The Doctor Away?
There are many medicines that are like a double edged sword. By this we mean that a particular medication may have a powerful effect on treating illness. The same medication may have serious and even fatal side effects. Cortisone is one of these medications. Aspirin is another.
There is some interesting and important news about aspirin. Most of us know that low dose aspirin has been recommended for adults who are at an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. In fact one study found that there was a 22% decrease in heart attacks in patients at risk who took a daily low dose pill.
Of equal importance is the fact that another study found that those who took a daily low dose aspirin pill for ten years had a 40% lower risk of colon cancer.
These impressive results present a dilemma that should be discussed with you doctor. A decision needs to be made whether in your particular case the benefit of taking a daily low dose aspirin pill outweighs the risks.

There Is A Link Between Hypertension And Dementia
A new study published in the Journal Of Alzheimer's Disease reported that people who had high blood pressure in their fifties were more likely to have cognitive problems in their eighties than those who had normal blood pressure in their fifties. This conclusion was reached after analyzing data from the Framingham Heart Study.
The implication of this study is very important for all of us. Hypertension is a serious problem for many reasons. Late dementia is only one example. There is no substitute for a regular medical examination.
