A Look At Statin Drugs

Do you take a stain drug? Many of us do. The good news is that statins have dramatically lowered the incidence of deaths from coronary artery disease. The bad news is that side effects from the statins are not uncommon and some of the side effects can be serious.

A recent study on statins from Harvard showed that nearly 20% of the 108,000 people studied reported adverse effects, most often muscle pain Less common complaints included fatigue and memory problems. During the eight year period of the study about 50% of those included discontinued the drugs, at least temporarily.

Our advice to you is that if you are taking a statin and have muscle weakness, pain or tenderness call your doctor and report this immediately. If the statin is the cause, the symptoms should go away within days or weeks. after the drug is stopped. If you continue with the statin in spite of the symptoms the damage could progress and lead to serious complications. There are other potential problems related to the use of statins. They will be discussed in the next blog.

Resistance Starches May Help You Lose Weight And Burn Fat

There is a new food type that might drastically change the way we eat. This new food type is not exactly new because all of the foods in this classification are starches.

So that is old hat; however, these are a special kind of starch called  resistance starch. {RS). They were given this name because they, unlike regular starches, resist digestion.

According to the new breed of nutrition scientists these RS carbs help us lose weight. They also help burn fat. This sounds like wishful thinking, but apparently there is sound science verifying these claims.

The unusual aspect of the RS starches is that they look like a starch but act more like a fiber. For that reason they pass through your stomach and small intestine without being digested.

Let me know if you are interested in learning more about this unusual food group.

Another Suggestion For Living Longer

Here is one of the latest and best health tips. It seems that people who eat more whole grains tend to live longer that those who do not. This conclusion was reached by the analysis of studies involving 786,ooo people published in the journal Circulation.

Each daily serving (about one slice of whole wheat bread} was associated with a 7% decline in death rate. People who ate three servings a day had a 20% lower cause of death

We do not have an explanation for the power of whole grains. It may be that those who ate the whole grains followed a healthier lifestyle in general. Never the less, incorporating more whole grains into our diets would be a minor but important change.

Four Health Tips To Reduce Your Risk Of Cancer

A large study published in JAMA Oncology concluded that 1/4 to 1/3 of all cancer cases and nearly half of all cancer deaths could be avoided if better lifestyle goals were followed. These goals are:

1) Do not smoke
2) Maintain a healthy weight
3) Limit alcohol
4) Exercise moderately at least 150 minutes a week or vigorously for at least 75 minutes a week

It was also found that people who are most physically active are at reduced risk for half of 26 major types of cancer. This may be new news to some, but we sounded the alarm and had the same suggestions in our  first book TriEnergetics. Look for yourself and get more tips for a healthy lifestyle.

Drinking Coffee May Have Health Benefits

We reported that eating eggs has been given a green light by the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Board. The board has also looked at drinking coffee and their recent report states that drinking coffee is safe and may even be good for you.

They reported that drinking three to five cups a day was associated with minimal health risks and may even have some benefits. The green light does not include lots of cream and sugar. The board also does not recommend drinking caffeine laced drinks such as "energy drinks".

Cut Down On Sugar

There is considerable data on the adverse health effects of added sugar in our diets. The evidence is so compelling that it is now recommended for us to limit added sugars to no more than 10% of our daily calories. Americans now average about 13% of calories from added sugar. Remember this is an average. Many exceed this by quite a bit.

Where are you on the sugar train? Where can you cut down on added sugar calories? Where are your sugar weaknesses? An obvious place to look for added sugars is at sugar sweetened soft drinks. If they are not your weakness what is?

Your life may depend on making the changes necessary to reduce the sugar in your diet.

Do You Have A High Blood Cholesterol?

We used to think that eating foods high in cholesterol was responsible for high blood cholesterol levels. Now we know that the main culprit is saturated fat in your diet. The cholesterol in foods like eggs and shrimp is different than the LDL in your blood that contributes to heart disease.

The former advice to limit cholesterol to 300 milligrams a day, less than the amount in two eggs. is no longer valid. We continue to recommend replacing the saturated fat in your diet with polyunsaturated fats such as found in many vegetable oils or monounsaturated fats such as found in olive oil.

The essence of good health is healthy eating and the essence of healthy eating was described in our books. Eat a well balanced diet  This will serve you well.
